WEEE Legisation - Case Study - Global Environmental Recycling Limited
Global Environmental Recycling Limited (GERCO) were one of the first licensed sites for refrigeration disposal in the UK. They now offer a comprehensive disposal service to many retail companies and councils across the UK.
GERCO is seeking to be approved as a WEEE Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF), and has chosen the Software Solution SAP BUSINESS ONE AND WR1 as the backbone of their submission.
GERCO’s operational processes are complicated by their significant involvement in Hazardous Waste processing, some of which is exported for treatment and/or disposal. So they must not only comply with WEEE , but also AE (Approved Exporter) and TFS (Transfrontier Shipment) Waste Regulations for Export of Hazardous Waste.

- Disassembly, recovery or preparation for disposal
- Provision of Consignment Notes
- Documentation to Support Export, including TFS control

What is all the Fuss About?
The Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations 2006.
Commencing 1 July 2007 any business that manufactures, brands or imports electrical and electronic equipment are responsible for the cost of collection, treatment and recycling of obligated WEEE generated in the UK. The regulations also affect distributors and retailers of WEEE as well as end users
What is WEEE?
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is a waste type consisting of any broken or unwanted electrical or electronic appliance. It is a point of concern considering that many components of such equipment are considered toxic and are not biodegradable.
In Short
The WEEE Directive aims to reduce the quantity of waste from electrical and electronic equipment and increase it’s re-use, recovery and recycling.
Who is Most Key to the Process?
Sites that treat, recover and recycle or export WEEE will need to be approved. They play a crucial part in providing evidence that different categories of waste have been dealt with correctly under the legislation.
What is an Approved Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF)?
A WEEE ATF is a licensed site carrying out treatment on waste electrical and electronic wastes. Treatment can include depollution, disassembly, shredding, recovery or preparation for disposal.
Only operators of approved ATF can issue evidence notes for the treatment, recovery or recycling of WEEE that takes place in the UK.
If you become an approved ATF and you intend to undertake the export of WEEE for further treatment, recovery or recycling, you will also need to apply to be an approved exporter (AE).
If the Export involves Hazardous Waste then there is also the Transfrontier Shipment of Waste Regulations (TFS). The regulation provides a range of different control procedures, which are determined by the classification of the waste and the country of destination, along with pre-approval for the shipment during an approved period.
